USA – Stewart Filmscreen, a leading manufacturer of professional-grade projection screens and the only screen manufacturer to receive two Academy Awards for technical merit, today announced Director’s Choice Generation 2, the next evolution of its four-way, continuously variable masking screen system.
The redesigned system reduces enclosure depth from 16.5 inches on Director’s Choice EVO to just 7.25 inches—more than a 56% reduction. It supports image widths up to 20 feet while maintaining compact 7-inch borders.
“Director’s Choice has always represented the fullest expression of Stewart engineering and craftsmanship,” said Mark Schelbert, Presidentat Stewart Filmscreen. “With Generation 2, we challenged ourselves to deliver more image in a significantly smaller package. The result gives our integration partners greater installation flexibility, easier access and a more modern control platform, while preserving the reference-quality presentation that defines Director’s Choice.”
A more compact platform
The reduced enclosure depth and smaller borders give architects, theater designers and integrators greater freedom when planning premium cinema spaces. More of the available wall can be dedicated to the image, while less space is required for the masking mechanism surrounding it.
More mounting options
Director’s Choice Generation 2 can now be wall mounted, expanding its application beyond installations designed around a deeply recessed screen assembly. This flexibility makes the system suitable for both purpose-built theaters and projects where architectural depth is limited.
QuickSnap front-loading installation
New to Director’s Choice Generation 2 is the QuickSnap front-loading screen attachment system. The screen material is installed from the front of the assembly using Stewart’s precision snap system, simplifying handling during installation and making future screen-material service more accessible.
Updated control integration
Director’s Choice Generation 2 transitions to the Somfy Digital Network, using Somfy motors and RS-485 serial communication. The updated control architecture provides greater programming flexibility and supports integration with leading third-party automation platforms.
Reference-quality screen materials
Director’s Choice Generation 2 can be specified with Stewart’s reference-screen materials, allowing each system to be optimized to the projector, room conditions, seating geometry and acoustic design.
Available material options include acoustically transparent configurations for installations with speakers positioned behind the image surface, creating an accurate and immersive home cinema experience.
Every Director’s Choice Generation 2 system is custom engineered and handcrafted at Stewart Filmscreen’s California manufacturing facility. The product reflects more than 70 years of experience in projection-screen engineering, material science, and precision manufacturing.
