England – Solid State Logic has introduced Odyssey, a new large-format recording and mixing console that broadens the company’s Future Analogue portfolio by combining the sonic character and workflow of a traditional analogue desk with comprehensive instant recall capabilities.
Following the launch of Oracle, Odyssey represents the next step in SSL’s ActiveAnalogue technology, a platform that allows engineers to enjoy a fully analogue signal path while benefiting from digitally controlled recall and session management. The concept is designed to preserve the tactile experience and sound quality associated with analogue consoles while eliminating many of the operational limitations that have traditionally accompanied them.
“With Odyssey, we’ve taken the revolutionary analogue Instant Recall philosophy first introduced with Oracle and expanded it into a no-limits modular console platform with full channel processing and Large and Small Fader,” explains Niall Feldman, Director of Special Projects at SSL. “Odyssey gives engineers everything they love about analogue sound and workflow of a familiar in-line console, while removing the compromises that have historically slowed large-scale productions. It’s a console designed to move at the speed of creativity.”
At the core of the system is SSL’s patented ActiveAnalogue architecture. Rather than relying on conventional digitally controlled analogue circuitry or low-resolution digital potentiometers, the platform employs high-resolution digital control operating transparently behind the analogue audio path. According to SSL, this approach maintains the integrity of its renowned SuperAnalogue circuitry while minimizing unwanted noise, distortion and excessive power consumption.
Each channel integrates a complete analogue processing path, including PureDrive microphone preamplifiers with DRIVE control, analogue dynamics processing, switchable E and G Series equalizers, assignable high-pass and low-pass filters, insert points, and dual motorized faders.
Odyssey has been designed as a modular platform that can be configured in systems ranging from 24+8 up to 96+8 channels. Studios can choose between straight-frame, curved ProStation and custom frame layouts, with options including integrated patchbays and dedicated producer sections.
The console’s center section consolidates monitoring, routing, mix control, communications, automation, DAW integration and immersive audio workflows. It also incorporates SSL’s THE BUS+ processing, Analogue Dynamic EQ, integrated DAW control and support for immersive production environments, including Dolby Atmos renderer control.
Complementing the hardware are SSL’s O-Control software suite and the O-Motion automation system, providing offline session preparation, project and snapshot management, complete console recall and DAW-based automation capabilities.
SSL has also released O Series V2.0, extending compatibility between Odyssey and Oracle. Engineers will be able to transfer projects directly between both consoles, while the update also introduces workflow improvements for Oracle users, including advanced Snapshot filtering, O-Motion DAW plugin automation and Odyssey’s TouchView dynamics display.
Odyssey is available immediately in Standard, ProStation and custom configurations, with systems ranging from 24+8 to 96+8 channels.
