From the perspective of Gunnar Dirks, engineer and head of development, Sennheiser presents the HD 480 Pro as a concrete response to the growing complexity of professional audio.
Professional audio is going through a moment of transformation. Work environments are increasingly diverse, workflows more complex, and the demands placed on tools higher than ever. In this scenario, having reliable references is no longer an advantage—it becomes a necessity.
It is from this premise that Sennheiser introduces the new HD 480 Pro, a headphone designed not as just another accessory in the studio, but as a central tool in monitoring and recording processes.
“Today we are presenting our new flagship headphone for monitoring and recording,” explains Gunnar Dirks, engineer and head of product development.
But beyond its position within the portfolio, the HD 480 Pro responds to a specific market need. Its development is directly linked to the success of the HD 490 Pro and to a clear demand from users: having a closed-back version that maintained the same level of quality and precision.
“We developed the HD 490 Pro with the highest standard of quality, and it was very well received. We heard many voices asking for a closed-back variant, and that’s how the HD 480 was born—as part of the same family, but with a highly requested design: the closed-back,” explains Dirks.
As part of the HD family, the 480 Pro is aimed at environments where isolation and precision are key, thus expanding its range of use in professional monitoring and recording.
Designing tools for increasingly complex audio
This process of listening is not accidental. It is, in fact, one of the pillars of Sennheiser’s approach when designing new products. The relationship with end users is not limited to validating ideas—it defines the development path.
For Dirks, designing a professional headphone means responding to a complex equation where technical precision and user experience must coexist without friction.
“We wanted to create reference headphones for audio professionals. It is essential that they have a neutral and honest frequency response, that they are comfortable during long sessions, and that the sound tells you exactly what you are doing,” he explains.
In that pursuit, engineering is not limited to the driver or internal acoustics. The physical design plays an equally important role. Every decision—from ergonomics to fit—directly impacts sound perception.
“People have different head sizes, and one of the biggest challenges is ensuring that the headphone fits correctly. With this design, we aimed for that high level of comfort to also translate into a consistent audio experience,” he adds.
This consistency is key in an environment where professionals work in multiple contexts: studios, home studios, mobile production, or field recording. The HD 480 Pro is designed precisely for that versatility, offering performance that remains stable regardless of the environment.
But behind the product, there is a broader philosophy. For Sennheiser, developing a headphone is not just a technical process—it is a journey that begins with listening.
“Designing with Sennheiser is always a journey. We talk to many users, we listen to their needs, their challenges, and we try to create solutions that allow them to work better,” says Dirks.
The idea of a “tool” appears again and again. It is not about building a device, but about offering a means for others to create. “Without a doubt, we think about products that allow people to do their magic,” he summarizes.
In that context, the launch of the HD 480 Pro connects with a broader perspective on the future of audio—a future that, according to Dirks, will be defined by greater complexity.
“The audio industry is facing a major shift. Work environments are becoming more and more diverse. To navigate that complexity, you need clear references in your daily work,” he reflects.
That reference is precisely the central point of the HD 480 Pro. In a world where everything becomes more dynamic and more hybrid, the ability to trust what you hear becomes a differentiating value.
And for Sennheiser, the HD 480 Pro is not just a new release, but a way of responding to an increasingly demanding industry, where precision is no longer an option—it is a necessity.
