Japan – Brompton Technology is powering the expansive LED volume at Crescent, Inc.’s Digi-Cast HANEDA STUDIO in Tokyo, Japan. Created as a cutting-edge virtual production environment, the facility combines one of the world’s largest LED volumes with Crescent’s own motion capture, volumetric video and photogrammetry technologies.
At the heart of the studio is a 41.5m-wide by 10m-high main LED wall, complemented by two movable 6m by 6m side walls and an approximately 23.5m by 15m LED ceiling. Divided into nine individually height-adjustable sections, the ceiling can be configured to meet the requirements of different productions. The main wall utilises next-generation LED panels newly developed by AUO, featuring a 1.95mm pixel pitch and a brightness of 2,000 nits, with AUO P3.9 panels used for the side walls and AUO P5.2 for the ceiling.
The complete LED environment is driven by 27 Brompton 4K Tessera SX40 LED processors and 57 Tessera XD 10G data distribution units, providingg the processing infrastructure for the studio’s large-scale and highly configurable LED setup.
“When we were designing Digi-Cast HANEDA STUDIO, we needed an LED processing platform with a proven track record and the flexibility to adapt to the way we want to work,” explains Kota Kikuya, Technical Director at Crescent, Inc. “Brompton’s Tessera platform is well established across the industry, but equally important for us is its API-based control, which allows us to build workflows around our own production needs. The colour-management options, including LiveGrade integration and 3D LUT application, give our team the flexibility required across a wide range of productions.”
The LED stage forms part of Crescent’s wider ‘Link-All’ philosophy, which brings the company’s different imaging technologies together within a single facility. Alongside virtual production, Crescent offers motion capture, volumetric video and photogrammetry capabilities, with the different studio spaces designed to work together in real time. Productions can also access an end-to-end workflow encompassing previs and techvis, scene and asset creation, and the final shoot.
The wider Digi-Cast HANEDA STUDIO development comprises an LED Stage building alongside a Production building, reflecting Crescent’s aim to create a comprehensive digital production environment rather than a standalone virtual production stage. Crescent’s original plans for the facility included dedicated volumetric video, photogrammetry and motion capture spaces, as well as facilities for audio recording and pre-visualisation.
Having opened in October 2025, Digi-Cast HANEDA STUDIO moved into full-scale operation from the beginning of 2026, with upcoming television drama series and streaming video projects among the productions planned for the facility.
“With one of the world’s largest LED volumes at its heart, Digi-Cast HANEDA STUDIO is a hugely impressive facility, both in its scale and in the flexibility it offers production teams,” concludes Elijah Ebo, Director of APAC Operations at Brompton Technology. “We’re delighted that Crescent has chosen Tessera SX40 and Tessera XD for such an ambitious project, and it is particularly exciting to see the team using Tessera’s API control and advanced colour-management capabilities to tailor the system around its own production requirements.”
