The
IBU World Championships Biathlon 2015 took place in Kontiolahti in Finland early
March, in bleak weather conditions. It all started with an unforgettable
opening ceremony with a parade of competing athletes from nearly 40 nations and
a speaker line-up including the Finnish Prime Minister, Alexander Stubb and
President of the International Biathlon Union, Anders Besseberg.

The
climax of the evening was an incredible show named Winner’s Journey, packed with light, dancers, aerial acrobats,
pyrotechnics, video and other special effects. Joensuu Market Square was filled
with those taking part in this event, witnessing modern dancers representing
sportsmen and their journey from preparation to finish line.

For
the show, six stages and four large screens were put to use – all arranged by the
company Valoparta Oy, who were in charge of organizing the opening ceremony.

Lighting
designer and director of Valoparta Oy, Kari Kola, informs: “I deployed six
G-Spot moving heads from SGM for special effects in the show. These units were operating
outdoors in -2?C under wet snow which was falling, yet there weren’t any
problems with the fixtures.” Delighted with the output of these LED IP65
profiles, he adds: “I think I will need to get some more G-Spots in a couple of
months!”
