Lighting Designer Tony Pérez used several Robe ROBIN
series moving lights for Mexican rock / pop band Motel’s show at the
Metropolitan Theatre in Mexico City which kicked off their new ‘Prisma’ Tour.
The show – attended by a capacity audience of 3000 –
featured eight LEDWash 1200s on a front truss, eight LEDWash 600s on the stage
floor, eight MMX WashBeams distributed on four independent trusses and eight
MMX Spot on an upstage truss – all supplied by local rental company Meridian
Pro.
Tony – who operated the lighting using an Avolites
Tiger Touch console – explained that the very first time he ever used Robe
fixtures was also with Motel in the same theatre during their first ever tour
in 2006!
So, not only did he have a great sense of deja vu, he
was also able to compare just how much advance there has been in Robe’s
products in eight years!
“Robe has evolved so much in that time … and has now
positioned itself as a favourite brand for so many lighting designers”, he
commented.
“The ROBIN LEDWash 1200s and 600s have a great colour
temperature. To split the LED rings and use them as individual effects gives
massive creative scope and a wonderful random strobe effect can be achieved by
playing with the different LED rings simultaneously”.
He has also used Robe’s ROBIN Pointe on other shows
for Motel and also for singer / songwriter Paty Cantú. “It’s an amazing
fixture,” he declares.
He loves all the Pointe’s colour effects and the
different prisms. “You have the advantage of being able to use the Pointe in numerous different ways depending on your
needs – it can be a beam, a spot or a wash …all in one unit! That’s something
you certainly cannot do with any other fixture!” he says.
His overall experience with Robe has always been “Most
satisfactory” and combining different models has always enabled him to get a
“Great result”.
Tony started lighting shows back in the days when only
conventional fixtures were available in México – which was a real test for any
designer’s imagination and ingenuity.
“Back then, the consoles were only for controlling
generics, so we started doing shows using the first moving lights often using multiple consoles – one for
conventionals and a dedicated controller one for scanners or whatever the
moving elements were! How things have changed on all fronts now!”
Today, with a professional career spanning over 20
years, he has worked with leading artists like Alejandra Guzmán, Pepe Aguilar,
Maldita Vecindad, Moenia, Reyli, Carlos Vives, Motel, Jaguares, Gloria Trevi,
Paty Cantú and Ximena Sariñana and many more
He has also participated as designer and operator at
the Festival del Centro Histórico event and the MX Beat Soundfest in México.
“I will continue specifying and using Robe lights
every time I possibly can,” he maintains, “Including for Paty Cantú’s current
‘Corazón Bipolar’ tour and of course the Motel ‘Prisma’ tour”.
