As part of CAPER 2025, Dan May, President of Blackmagic Design Americas, spoke about the present and future of the company, his vision of technology as a democratizing tool, and the role of Latin America in the brand’s global growth. With passion and clarity, he defined a roadmap that combines accessibility, collaboration, and creativity without borders.

Blackmagic Design was created in 2001 by Grant Petty. Its first product, the DeckLink video capture card, was launched in 2002 and became a turning point for professional video workflows.

“Blackmagic Design has committed to making high-resolution image workflows an affordable reality for everyone, so that the television industry and the post-production area can become a truly creative sector,” acknowledged Petty – CEO.

Dan May, President of Blackmagic Design Americas, took part in a new edition of Caper Show. During the trade exhibition held in the city of Buenos Aires, May spoke exclusively with Latam Stage.

“At Blackmagic Design we always think about how to empower our customers with tools they previously would not have had access to,” began Dan May, with the calmness of someone who speaks from the experience of a company that revolutionized the global audiovisual market.

That vision, he explains, translates into both high-performance professional products and accessible solutions for new creators. “We can help by creating a great product at an affordable price or by developing technologies that add new capabilities and features that didn’t exist on the market before,” he noted.

Examples of that philosophy are the Blackmagic Camera app, which allows high-quality video capture from mobile devices, and Blackmagic Cloud, which extends the collaborative capabilities of DaVinci Resolve. “Every innovation we launch starts from a simple question: how do we help our customers create better audiovisual content?” summarized May.

The power of integrating hardware and software
The identity of Blackmagic Design is sustained by a principle that sets it apart: full integration between hardware and software. “We are a unique company because we develop cameras, live production systems, switchers, and post-production software under the same ecosystem,” he explained.

From digital cinema cameras like the Blackmagic Camera 17K65, to production tools such as the ATEM and the DaVinci Resolve suite, the Australian brand offers a continuous workflow experience between capture, editing, color grading, and broadcasting. “We want the user who shoots with a Blackmagic camera to be able to edit and finish that project in Resolve with the same workflow advantages and professional quality,” he added.

The convergence between hardware and software not only simplifies processes but drives an unprecedented collaborative work model. “It’s exciting to see how our customers can shoot in RAW, do live multicam editing, and then continue the project on the same platform,” said May.

Latin America, a territory of growth and collaboration
During his visit to Buenos Aires, Dan May highlighted the role of Latin America as a strategic region for Blackmagic Design’s development. “We are building partnerships with local resellers and distributors because we understand that success depends not only on the product but also on the support and trust that accompany each customer,” he emphasized.

The vision is clear: to strengthen the distribution and training network so that more professionals in the region adopt Blackmagic technology as a standard. “We want every user to feel comfortable, supported, and capable of achieving professional results with our solutions,” he stressed.

Looking ahead, May previewed one of the areas that generates the most excitement within the company: remote collaboration. “We are very focused on connecting users through Blackmagic Cloud: for a cinematographer to be able to shoot in one country, an editor to work in another, and a colorist to grade from another part of the world, all in real time,” he explained.

That concept—where creativity travels through the cloud and is amplified by accessible technology—sums up the essence of Blackmagic Design: a company that not only manufactures tools but also connects people to tell better stories.
